Split one room’s electricity bill

Illustrative example figures are filled in, including the rate. Enter your own readings and rate. Everything is calculated on this page; nothing is uploaded or saved.

1. Amount to split

Sub-meter reading at the start of the period.

Reading at the end of the period.

Your rate. Check your own bill or agreement.

For example a share of meter rent. Leave empty if none.

2. How to share it

30 for September, 31 for October.

3. Rounding

Shares are rounded down, so together they never exceed the bill. The leftover is shown separately.

Amount to split

₹2,099.50

Amount to split − total charged. Decide whether you absorb it or add it to one share, and write that down.

Rates and readings are your inputs. Local tariffs and billing rules vary; check your electricity bill and rental agreement.

How the electricity split is calculated

  • Units = current sub-meter reading − previous reading.
  • Amount to split = units × your rate per unit + any fixed charge you add, or a bill amount you enter directly.
  • Equal share = amount ÷ number of tenants.
  • By days stayed = amount × that tenant’s days ÷ the total days of all tenants sharing the meter. Count the days each tenant stayed in the billing period, including the move-in day.
  • Rounding: each share is rounded down to ₹1 (or ₹5, ₹10 or the paisa, as you choose). Rounding remainder = amount − total charged. It is never negative, so tenants are never charged more than the bill.

Worked example (illustrative figures)

September has 30 days. Room 102’s sub-meter went from 4,520 to 4,767, so 247 units were used. At an example rate of ₹8.50 a unit, the amount is 247 × ₹8.50 = ₹2,099.50. T-01 and T-02 stayed all 30 days; T-03 moved in on 16 September and stayed 15 days, so the total is 75 tenant-days.

Example split for Room 102, amounts in ₹
TenantDaysExact share by daysCharged (rounded down)Equal split instead
T-01302,099.50 × 30 ÷ 75 = 839.80839699
T-02302,099.50 × 30 ÷ 75 = 839.80839699
T-03152,099.50 × 15 ÷ 75 = 419.90419699
Total752,099.502,097 (remainder 2.50)2,097 (remainder 2.50)

By days, T-03 pays ₹419 for half a month. An equal split would charge everyone ₹699, including T-03 for the 15 days they were not in the room.

Edge cases and limits

  • Zero units or a zero rate gives ₹0 to split and ₹0 shares.
  • A current reading lower than the previous one is flagged. If the meter was reset or replaced, choose “A bill amount” and enter the amount.
  • A tenant with 0 days pays nothing. If every tenant has 0 days, there is no one to charge and the calculator asks you to check the days.
  • Days stayed cannot be more than the days in the period, and at least one tenant is needed.
  • One rate per unit is used. If your supplier charges different rates for different slabs, or adds taxes and fixed charges, enter the bill amount instead.
  • Splitting by days assumes use was spread evenly. It cannot tell who ran an air conditioner; only a meter per tenant can.

How electricity bills work in EasyAavaas

In the EasyAavaas app, an owner, manager or warden creates an electricity bill for a room and billing month by entering the units consumed, or the previous and current meter readings, and the per-unit rate. The last rate and reading are filled in the next time. The bill is split equally among the room’s occupants or assigned to one tenant, each share is added to that tenant’s rent record for the month, and the tenant is notified. Other charges such as maintenance or food can be added as a flat “Other” bill.

The app does not connect to smart meters, apply tariff slabs or pro-rate by days stayed. If you use the day-based split from this calculator, add each tenant’s share as a separate charge assigned to that tenant and note how you worked it out. Read the electricity and maintenance charges guide and see how rent records include utility charges. EasyAavaas is free forever for owners, staff and tenants.

Common questions

How do I split electricity fairly between PG tenants in one room?

Read the room’s sub-meter at the start and end of the period, multiply the units by the rate you charge, and share the amount equally if everyone stayed the whole period or by days stayed if someone moved in or out. Tell tenants the method before the first bill.

Should a tenant who moved in mid-month pay a full share?

With an equal split they would. A split by days stayed charges them only for the days they were in the room, which most tenants find fairer. Whichever you choose, use it consistently and write it in the house rules.

What rate per unit should I use?

The rate is your input. Use the rate on your electricity bill or the one in your rental agreement. Tariffs and the rules on what an owner may charge tenants differ by state and supplier, so check your current bill and local rules.

What do I do with the rounding remainder?

It is the few rupees or paise left after each share is rounded down. Either absorb it as the owner or add it to one share, and note the choice so the numbers can be checked later.

Can EasyAavaas read my meter automatically?

No. EasyAavaas has no smart-meter connection. You enter the units or the previous and current readings and the rate, and the app works out the bill and adds each share to the tenant’s rent record.
